Costa Rica Service Project

Day 1 | San Jose
Welcome to beautiful Costa Rica!  Your plane will land in the Juan Santamaría International Airport. Once everyone has collected their bags, we will transfer to our hotel for the evening and gather for pizzas while your guides brief you on your trip itinerary and answer all your last minute questions. Alternatively we can transfer already to Arenal if we have arrive early. (D)

Day 2 | Arenal
We will start our journey traveling north east across the continental divide to the north Caribbean slopes where the active Arenal Volcano nestles and stopping en route at restaurant for your first Costa Rican lunch. After checking in to our hotel, we will head to the Sky Trek and Tram, a zip line tour that will fill you with adrenaline as we fly over canopy tree tops, zip across canyons and enjoy the amazing views of the volcano and lake.  After our adrenaline rush, we will visit the nearby EcoZoo for an introduction to some tropical creepy crawlies. And to top off our day, we will soak our travel worn bodies in the therapeutic waters of the Arenal hot springs. (B, L, D)

Day 3 | Pocosol
Get ready for a complete immersion into Costa Rican culture, cuisine and the hard working lifestyle of Costa Rican farming families. Upon arrival we will receive an orientation of this unique community based organization called Juanilama that will host our visit, activities and service project for the next two days. Part of our orientation will include a charming cooking class. We will start working in the afternoon and in the early evening we will finally meet our home stay families for the next two nights (homestay). (B, L, D)

Day 4 | Pocosol
The “tico” way is the way today!! That means rise and shine bright and early and get to work.  Your service project will involve mixing and laying cement for the community side walk.  In the afternoon we will hike to a nearby river to cool off under a refreshing waterfal (homestay). (B, L, D)

Day 5 | Pacuare / Cocles
We must awake early this morning for a shuttle to the town of Siquirres where we will have a hearty breakfast for a thrilling day of rafting through the rainforest! The Pacuare River, world re-known for its spectacular scenery and incomparable rapids, flows through a beautiful gorge lined by lush tropical forests and steep waterfalls. As we drop through the steep ravine, we will stop for a delicious river lunch prepared by our skillful guides. Towards the very end of our paddle, we will all get a chance to float through Dos Montañas, an astounding natural wonder in itself. Rafting the class III-IV rapids of this incomparable river will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable adventures of our trip. This evening we transfer to the Caribbean. (B, L, D)

Day 6 | Cocles
This morning we will visit the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge just down the coast. Our hike will lead us to hidden coves, rocky shores, abandoned villages and spooky caves. We will have lunch at a nearby, very Caribbean restaurant, and in the afternoon everyone can enjoy the beach or maybe even pick up a soccer match with some of the kids from town. (B, L, D)

Day 7 | Cocles
Today we will visit a wildlife rescue center that actually allows visitor to touch the animals and get involved. After our time at the center, everyone will get a chance to do a bit of souvenir shopping in the town of Puerto Viejo and have lunch* before we head back to San Jose.  Tonight we will celebrate all our accomplishments on the trip with a fun dinner outting in San Jose.
