The Baja Discovery
Day 1 – Arrival in Mexico – En route from San Diego to Baja, we will hike to Petroglyphs, in Cataviña. Cataviña is surrounded by some fascinating country, the Desierto Central de Baja California, Baja’s unique Central Desert. Much of the desert is under legal protection, preserving its biological treasures. Hundreds of species of cactus live here, many of them found nowhere else in the world. This our first taste of desert wildlife!
Day 2 – Guerrero Negro – We continue south through the Valle de los Cirios and on to Ojo de Liebre, or Scammon’s Lagoon. We set up camp on the shores of one of the last remaining mating and calving grounds of the Pacific Gray Whale. Spouts are sometimes visible from camp. Either tonight or tomorrow morning, depending on the weather, we set out on the lagoon with the local fishermen to see the friendly gray whales of Scammon’s Lagoon!
Days 3-5 – Bahía de los Angeles – Distinguished for being one of the most beautiful bays of Mexico, Bahia de Los Angeles is formed by a narrow sandy point backed by the rocky mountains of Calamajue and San Jose. Protecting the bay is Isla del Angel de la Guarda (Guardian Angel Island) making the sea calm and peaceful. Over the next three days, we will visit the local Natural History Museum with its collection of art crafts from the Cochimí Indians and the Central Desert of Baja; visit the Sea Turtle Conservation Program and discuss natural resource use, fisheries collapse, and alternative economic opportunities; visit the
wetland ecosystem around the secluded beach of la Unica, which is especially fragile on the arid and rocky coasts of Baja California.
Day 6 – Bahía de los Angeles – Early morning departure with Lunch in El Rosario all the way back to San Diego, CA. Adios!
